General Discussion / Re: How Do You Personally Prefer Posts

I like one at a time (or a few at a time)... I can compare for upgrades quickly.... and then it's easy to download just what I want.... but as long as you list the multiple titles in a zip folder, that's fine with me if it's easier for you.

General Discussion / How Do You Personally Prefer Posts

Question.  How do each of you personally prefer posts?  One album at a time or in batches? Just askin'. ;)

P.S.

How rude that someone would "accuse" you of anything when downloading pirated music.  What a jerk!

Everything makes a difference.  Whether or not it was an analog to digital conversion, the encoder that was used, the equipment used when converting, even the electrical resistance in the cables hooking up your stuff to convert vinyl to anything when they do the conversions without filters.  Not all encoders are created equal. LOL

Some CD's are the same way.  If it's a self-produced CD like a lot of Arlo Guthrie's stuff for example they will never convert to 320 even if from wav because some were mastered at a different sample rate.

It's an endless argument.  I just shoot for the highest quality I can get, but that's not always reflected by the bitrate.  It's an indicator though and that's what I use it as.  I'd rather have a good sounding 128 than a bad sounding scratchy 320.  But if they are 128 to start with there is no reason to inflate them so that you have to use more space to store them.  That's my main gripe.

I agree with Lomax96 about the quality of the vinyl. I had someone accuse me of lying about a FLAC file, they were wrong I had ripped it from a vinyl record of cheaper quality.

With big collections space is always an issue. I can with my best will not hear ANY differences between @192 and @320. So for me @192 is the perfect compromise when it comes to space up against quality. 40% more space without any audible detoriation is a good deal, I think. If it is not @320, then I will not have it, tends to be a bit snobbish in my opinion.

That said, when it comes to old vinyl rips, the quality of the vinyl matters far more than the bitrate. After having listened to thousands of vinyl rips, I have often chosen the @128 over the @320 due to much better sound.

Then I must be a snob! Everything below 320 goes to the bin and I'll search for a better copy. And I HATE people who convert music from a lower bitrate to 320!

Hello everyone,

I wanted to chime in again on the current discussion about FLAC. I downloaded the same albums at three different bitrates and tested them with headphones. I didn't notice any significant difference. Perhaps it's due to my age (59 years). I long thought 320 kbps wasn't good enough, but I was also influenced by other opinions. Since my collection has grown quite large, perhaps I should take the time to lower the bitrate. The collection has reached a data volume of approximately 26 TB. Thanks for the discussion.

To All:

I do the same thing...Convert a flac to a 320.  Nothing wrong with that.  Flacs usually check out mostly 320 when converted.  I'm not really that much of a stickler for the bitrate thing either.  I just hate it when people purposively inflate them.  Wastes disc space, which I really do care about.  I have spent so much money on hard drives, and I value every TB of space I have.  I check all of them, but only to reduce them if they aren't genuine to what they really are to save space.  I have lots of music that isn't 320, but if that's all I can get on an album I love, I keep it.  Lots of the old stuff and lots of the acoustic stuff never was a 320 anyway and I realize that.  I also realize that some people prefer the smaller bitrates because they don't have computers that can handle it all.  I just wanted countrygirl not to waste time.  That's a lot of work if it's for nothing.  I appreciate all you guys share in whatever format you want to share it!!!  Thank you much for all I've stolen from you!  This is a great hub with wonderful, considerate people.

I do exactly the same as Edward84, downloading in flac and converting them to 320, that's good enough for a good stereo-installation or headphones. With the setup most people use is flac (and the size it takes) totally not functional.

Flac (or lossless as they say ... not true, it's still compressed, but less than mp3) is only noticable for trained ears on a superb installation, but if you play and mp3-320 and then the same file in flac, you won't hear any difference. For real lossless sound you need .wav (wavpack or an iso from the original cd).

But if there's interest from more members in flac-albums I can add a selection to my collection.
